Nixon's AccomplishmentsDuring the 1968 election he got 43.5% of the popular vote and then became President of the United States. When he was President, Nixon focused on his foreign policy, which would be known as the triangular diplomacy. Which was to drive a wedge between the USSR and China. During this diplomacy he gave aid to China and offered a spot in the United Nations for China. Nixon was the first President to visit China and met with Mao Zedong. At the time this was never heard of, having a democracy country meet with a communist country. The American people trusted him because he was anti-communist. Also during his time in office the Cold War was dying down and tensions between the USSR and US were very low. From that he traveled to Moscow to talk to Leonid Brezhenv about nuclear disarmament. Leonid and Nixon created a joint space exploration program.

Nixon's Downfall
In 1972 before the new election five men broke into the Watergate Hotel in Washington D.C. where the Democrat headquarters were located. The men were setting up wiretaps to get information for the Republican party. The leader of the group was on the committee to re-elect Nixon which was known as CREEP. Nixon was able to stop this from getting into the hands of the media and won the 1972 election.
However after he won the story opens up from Nixon's Vice President Spir Angnew, where Angnew was charged with bribery and tax evasions. This was not related to Watergate but it opened the doors to understanding Watergate. Nixon's own personal counsel John Dean rats on Nixon about Watergate. From this Nixon goes on TV and says "I am not a crook" to help reassure the American people. The Senate finds recording of conversations that take place in the Oval Office and Nixon was not willing to give them up and 17 minutes go missing. The tapes show that Nixon was a bully toward people in the Oval Office. All the evidence is pointing toward Nixon that he ordered the Watergate and the Senate draws up papers to impeach him. Before he gets impeached Nixon resigns (only president to do so) and Gerald Ford becomes the new US President. Ford then pardons Nixon which creates a divide between the American people and the American government. |
