Background InformationLong before the United States became a nation slavery was one of the biggest parts of society back in the 1500's. This still continued until 1864 with the Civil War. After the war was over the 13th Amendment outlawed slavery in the United States. The 14th Amendment gave citizenship to anyone born in the United States. Lastly the 15th Amendment gave voting rights to any male regardless of color and race. Even though the country had these new laws, it was still divide with the Souths old ways. Where in the South they created the Jim Crow Laws, that made fun of African Americans. With the Jim Crow Laws, there was voting laws, marrying laws and many other racist laws. Also with this time the Plessy vs. Ferguson case created "separate but equal" with segregation of colored from whites. These events lead up to many more events of the Civl Rights Movement.

Late 50's early 60'sRosa Parks is one of the many famous people that helped push the Civil Rights Movement. On December 1st, 1955 she was on a bus were she didn't give up her seat to a white man and was forced off the bus by police. She was then arrested, where this created the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
Also during this the Brown vs. Board case was also another turning point in the Civil Rights movement. Where Brown showed how segregation showed a mental change in African American children. That side affect was on how the children felt like they were not as smart and treated the same as white children. This was taken to the supreme court were the court created a law that integrated colored children with whites. One school that refused this was Little Rock Nine. Where Eisenhower sent in the 101st Airborne Unit, to walk children to school for a year. |
